The Current Directory
PHP Directory Function Basics – Part 3

Introduction
This is part 3 of my series, PHP Directory Function Basics. In this part of the series, we look at the use of the current directory.

Note: If you cannot see the code or if you think anything is missing in this article (broken link, image absent), just contact me at forchatrans@yahoo.com. That is, contact me for the slightest problem you have about what you are reading.

URL and Directory Path
Note that in the previous two parts of the series, the directory path has always begun from the root directory of the hard drive (c:/). It is possible to have a path, which begins with a URL; something like http://www.awebsite.com/directory1/directory2. In this case the directories are in the server. To achieve this you will have to do some configuration at the server. Well, you may not be allowed to do any such configuration at the server. In that case a good solution is to work with the current directory: the directory that has the PHP script, like the ones we have created in the previous parts of the series. The current directory can be the home directory at the server or any sub directory at the server that has the PHP script.

When you work with the current directory, you can access any sub directory descending from the current directory. You do not need to precede the first sub directory in the string argument with a forward slash or anything else. We have examples below.

Creating a Sub Directory in Home Directory
By home directory here, I am referring to the directory of your server that corresponds to the domain (e.g. http://www.somewebsite.com). To create a sub directory in the home directory, put the PHP script that creates sub directory in the home directory.

For now, replace the content of the temp.php file in the home directory with the following.

<?php

    mkdir(“directoryA”);

?>

Try the code. Use your operating system to go to the home directory of your server and you should see the directory, directoryA.

While the current directory is the home directory, let us create directoryB in directoryA. Replace the content of the above file with the following code and try.

<?php

    mkdir(“directoryA/directoryB”);

?>

Use your operating system and open directoryA and you should see directoryB. As you can see, in the string argument of the mkdir() function, the first sub directory (directoryA) is not preceded by a forward slash or anything else.

Try the following code, which creates directoryC in directory directoryB, from the current directory, which for now is the home directory.

<?php

    mkdir(“directoryA/directoryB/directoryC”);

?>

You should now have directoryC in directoryB.

Accessing the Current Directory Itself
While you are at the current directory, you can use the opendir(), readdir, closedir(), mkdir() rmdir() and other functions for sub directories that are descendants of the current directory. So, with these functions, if you want to access a sub directory, you type the relative path in the string argument of the function (or depending on the function, type the corresponding handle).

What about the case when you want to access the items of the current directory itself? In this case you use a single dot to represent the current directory. Hey, while in the current directory, you can also access items in the immediate parent directory (if it exists), using two dots. Let us look at examples.

Reading Content of the Current Directory
Use your text editor to create a text file with the name, file2.txt (type anything inside the file) in the directory, directoryB. Type (copy and paste) the following and save with the name cur.php in directory directoryB (file2.txt and cur.php are two independent files in the same directory).

<?php

    $ dirHandle = opendir(“.”);

    while (true == ($ fileOrdirName = readdir($ dirHandle)))
        {
            echo $ fileOrdirName; echo “<br “;
        }

    closedir($ dirHandle);

?>

The aim is to list the items in the current directory. The current directory now is directoryB since it has the php file. Note that in the string argument of the function, opendir(), we have just a dot. This dot identifies the current directory.

Try the code; in the address bar of my browser I had to type, http://localhost/directoryA/directoryB/cur.php . Your browser should display something like:

.
..
directoryC
cur.php
file2.txt

All the items in the current directory are listed.

Reading Content of the Immediate Parent Directory
To read content of the immediate parent directory of the current directory, use the above procedure, but instead of one dot for the string argument, use two dots. Use your text editor to create a text file with the name, file1.txt (type anything inside) in the directory, directoryA. The aim now is to list the items of the immediate parent directory. Go to the file cur.php and replace the single dot in the string argument with two dots, where the second dot follows the first, like “..” .

Try the code. Your browser should display something like:

.
..
directoryB
file1.txt

All the items of the immediate parent directory, directoryA have been displayed.

We have done enough for this part of the series. Let us stop here and continue in the next part of the series.

Adolescence 2

Adolescence 2

Although it is night, I sit in the bathroom, waiting.

Sweat prickles behind my knees, the baby-breasts are alert.

Venetian blinds slice up the moon; the tiles quiver in pale strips.

Then they come, the three seal men with eyes as round

As dinner plates and eyelashes like sharpened tines.

They bring the scent of licorice. One sits in the washbowl,

One on the bathtub edge; one leans against the door.

“Can you feel it yet?” they whisper.

I don’t know what to say, again. They chuckle,

Patting their sleek bodies with their hands.

“Well, maybe next time.” And they rise,

Glittering like pools of ink under moonlight,

And vanish. I clutch at the ragged holes

They leave behind, here at the edge of darkness.

Night rests like a ball of fur on my tongue.

 Interpretation:

     In the first stanza the author is waiting for someone or something to happen. “The baby-breasts are alert.” Letting us know she is young and her body is experiencing something. In the first Stanza she gives a description of the place she is sitting in.  It is a lonely place or a private place. She describes the condition of the place. In line three she may be in Venice an Italian place as she gives reference to the blinds as it slices up the moon.  In line three she gives a description of the tiles on the wall and their color. She is suggesting that the tiles tremble or they are breaking maybe because in her imagination everything is breaking down in her world and now everything in her childhood life is fading away. In the second line she is nervous and anxious about who or what is coming.

     In the second stanza “they come” referring to cockroaches. In her imagination she is being interrogated by “The three seal men.” referred as cockroaches. The word seal means to confirm something so in her imagination the cockroaches seal the deal of her adolescence. In line six the author is suggesting that the cockroaches smell like candy. She remembers the scent of her childhood it smells sweet. In line eight “Can you feel it yet?” Sums up her anticipation and anxiety/Can she feel her puberty spurt? Yet! They whisper suggests that it is something she doesn’t want anyone to know about it is their secret.

     In the third stanza maybe their hands patting may indicate as a sign that they are ready to go. They say “Well maybe next time.” It suggests maybe she will accept the fact that she is going thru puberty at a later time. It is so dark in gloomy in her mind and in her imagination they disappear like shiny little lights.

     The fourth stanza indicates the three seal men leave some type of impression. She tries to hold on tightly to her imagination as it leaves her in her own reality. She is growing up. She feels it is an unpleasant place. She is left alone to grow up and she feels it is a dark heavy place. In the end the night sleeps and she is speechless about what has happened to her.

How to Make Money Online For Free With Fiverr.com

How to Make Money Online For Free With Fiverr.com

Looking for the best site to make money on for free? A legitimate site that doesn’t require you to invest thousands of dollars or doesn’t charge you any crazy registration and membership fees? Think you don’t have any skills to offer in exchange for money?… Well, you are in for a treat!

Fiverr.com
Introducing Fivver.com. Fiverr is a fairly new website with a genius idea behind it. Its a new kind of freelancing website, but much better and easier for beginners to start making money on it. And unlike freelancing sites, its not just limited to major freelancing gigs such as web design, coding and etc. Anything and I mean anything that you can turn into a service of some kind, can be a gig on Fiverr that you can make money with. It basically allows you to create any kind of gigs, and offer them to the public.

Make over & over again
Fiverr is a site where people offer their services to others. It simply connects service providers with potential costumers. As the name suggests, all the gigs are . For buyers its all free and there is no fee. But, as a service provider, you pay a fee to Fiverr which is for every you earn, which I think is a fair fee, considering it makes it easy for you to find costumers and for potential costumers to find you. Which I believe makes Fiverr the best site to make money on for free (Yes, you can argue that since you spend time working on gigs, its not really free. But, do you know of any real “free” ways to make money online? To make money, you have to put something into it. If its not money in the form of investment, it would be your time and some serious efforts. Plus, when most people say free, they mean financially).

Get paid for doing almost anything!
The great thing about Fiverr is that anybody can make money on it. You don’t have to be a graphic designer or PHP coder or what have you to be able to make money. If you can take a picture, write a song, draw cartoon,text message, tweet, translate to and from any language… (the list goes on and on), then you can make money on Fiverr.

All ads for gigs have a similar structure, which goes something like “I will….for ?. Whatever kind of service you can do for other will fill in the blank, whether its taking a picture of a street, installing a wordpress theme, making a video of yourself singing a song, or any thing you can imagine.

I can not think of any easier and better way to make money online. It’s simply great!  Here are few samples of the kind of gigs people are offering on Fiverr, and are actually making money doing them:

>
    I will teach you how to make money online for

    I will offer travel advice for post-World Cup wanderers for

    I will manually submit your website to major directories for

    I will make a doodle for you for

    I will give you advice to quit smoking in 2 weeks for

    I will design your next tattoo for

    I will mail a postcard from New York City for

    I will give you a wake up call for
  >

The system is set up somehow that after you are done with a project, the buyers can leave positive or negative feedback, which can help or hurt your chances of getting more clients. The better you work, the more positive feedback you get, which obviously brings in more clients. So, you can use Fiverr to build a profile for yourself and get some clients. Its a great way to start building your reputation for whatever service you offer.

I have used Fiverr myself a few times to outsource some of the tasks that I didn’t have the time or knowledge to do, and I can tell you that it was a great experience. And now I am thinking of offering a few gigs of my own to make few extra dollars whenever I have some free time.

If you are looking for quick and easy ways to make money online, but, don’t have or want to spend thousands of dollars in investments, or think that that you don’t have any skills to offer, think again! If you can do anything someone might need, you can make money on Fiverr.com. And that’s why I thing Fiverr is the best site to make money on for free.

Beginners Guide to a Programming Language: Php and Php Scripts PHP Tutorials

php scripts PHP Tutorials
by phylevn

Beginners Guide to a Programming Language: Php

Not a bad language in itself, and definitely nicer than the perl CGI scripts that preceeded it, it’s a very commonly used language and an absolute necessity if you want to get into web programming. This and Microsoft’s ASP.NET are literally the two dynamic languages around on the web at the moment. Sure there’s others, but these two rule the roost, most open source (and a lot of closed source) web apps use this – mediawiki, drupal and joomla to name just the first 3 that came to mind. It’s also pretty easy to pick up, but it’s not as much of a running joke as VB tends to be and doesn’t let you slip into quite as many bad practices.

That said, it still does let you slip into lots of bad practices, and while you can quite happily “tame” these if you’ve been programming in a nicer language already it’s perhaps not the wisest move to expose yourself to them from the word go. There’s also the obvious point that PHP is a web based scripting language and not a general purpose “traditional” programming language (which, depending on what you want to do, could be a pro or a con.) Again, because it’s so widely used and pretty easy to pick up, you also get a lot of badly written and sometimes plainly wrong tutorials around for it – though at least the W3C provide some good, certified ones that you can be sure are accurate and reliable. (2)

So should you go with it as an initial choice of language? Unless you only ever want to do web based stuff I’d steer clear, and even then I’d be careful. I’m no PHP expert but I can do bits in it and MySQL that I need to, and coming from Java background it didn’t take me more than a couple of weeks to comprehensively pick the basics up and get going with it in a useful way. It’s a possibility, but I honestly wouldn’t recommend starting with a web based language unless you only ever intend to do web based work. Migrating from a “normal” language to a web based one is pretty trivial, the other way round tends to be rather more difficult.

Saving Money on Your Ecommerce Site

PHP Guestbooks
by Elven*Nicky

Saving Money on Your Ecommerce Site

After building and transferring many e-commerce sites it still amazes me that owners of e-commerce businesses are still wasting money in three basic ways. For fear of stating the obvious, saving money is the same as making money £100 saved is £100 added to your profit margin. Here are three basic ways to save money on your e-commerce site and increase your profits. While they may be simple we know they are overlooked time and time again resulting in thousands in lost revenue.

ABORTED SALES
While most modern shopping carts come with many features, they all involve the collecting of information from clients. Name, address, telephone number, user name, password, email address and so on. Yes we understand that these details are only required for the first order but let’s take a look at the new buyers experience.

They have browsed your site and found a product they wish to buy, they begin the checkout process and input all the details above. Your cart then builds the order and transfers them to paypal or whatever payment gateway you use. What happens next? “Please input your name, address, email, telephone number……” The result? Lost and aborted sales, surfers are lazy creatures we know that. In an ideal world your cart would have passed all those variables to the gateway and the user would not have to input them again, however because there are so many gateways and they all require different variables this is difficult.

So now you log in to the admin section of your cart and see an order only to find there is no matching payment. Thje solution is simple, fire up your email program and send them an email. “We noticed that you placed an order for our xxxxxxx however unfortunately we did not receive payment for that item so were unable to despatch it. Did you have difficulty with our ordering system? Is there anything we can do to help you? If so please contact us in one of the following ways…..”

Taking a few moments to send them an email can recover the sale, or at worst you can find out which part of your ordering system isn’t working for them and have it worked on. If you have your own merchant account you could have them call you and take their order by phone. Customers like to feel like customers not numbers, the fact that you took the time to contact them to find out what was wrong will give them confidence in your store and may recover the sale.

CHARGEBACKS
The curse of any e-commerce store the dreaded chargeback. We are sure you have all experienced it. You take an order, despatch it and a few weeks later get a chargeback. The result you have sent goods and have to refund the price of the product and pay a chargeback fee.

Firstly make sure your payment gateway offers some sort of seller protection. Paypal for example have a full seller protection policy. This is useful to prevent fraud. It is totally unfair that some dishonest people initiate chargebacks after receiving goods, however as long as your gateway has seller protection and you have saved order details and proof of despatch you can go someway to protecting yourself against that.

Surprisingly most chargebacks are not fraudulent, they are caused by the seller forgetting who they bought from, especially if your registered company name with your gateway is different from that of your site. An example your company is called Freds Enterprises but your website is widgetsgalore.com, the client buys a widget and at the end of the month sees a charge to their card from Freds Enterprises. They don’t recognise it they contact their card issuer and chargeback.

This is very easy to avoid. Before they get transferred to payment sate clearly in your cart “Please remember you will be billed by Freds Enterprizes not widgetsgalore.com”. When they are returned to your site thank them for the order then remind them again, “Please remember you will be billed by Freds Enterprises not widgetsgalore.com”

When you send them an email telling them their order has been dispatched tell them again “Please remember you will be billed by Freds Enterprises not widgetsgalore.com” By now they should be getting the message. However, and this alone has reduced the number of chargebacks to many of our clients, we recommend that you FOLLOW UP YOUR ORDERS and a couple of weeks after the purchase send the client another email. Thank them for their purchase, tell them you hope they are enjoying your product and once again remind them “Please remember you will be billed by Freds Enterprises not widgetsgalore.com”

Repetition is the key the more you tell them the more chance they have of recognising your company name on their credit card statement.

HOSTING
The money being wasted on inflated e-commerce hosting is incredible. Many of our clients have moved to our service due to the limited and very expensive packages of many so called e-commerce hosts. Let us be very clear on this, if you have your own store this is what you should have.

1. Your own design. Your store should not look like everyone elses, or be template built. If you used an online store designer to build your site we guarantee there are 100 other stores that look just like yours only with a different name. Hardly good for your online image.

2. You should have your own hosting. Not a sub folder of some larger site or virtual hosting. You should be able to add things like a links directory, message boards, support forums, guestbooks and what ever else you think would enhance your site. You should be able to have features added or removed from your cart so that it operates as you want it to. To find out if you have your own hosting email your host and ask them if you can add any of the above. It never ceases to amaze us how many store owners do not even have access to simple things like MYSQL or ftp.

3. There should be no fees payable by you other than a monthly hosting fee. Incredible as it sounds we have seen sites charge a monthly fee, plus a per item listing fee, a per item maintenance fee, commission on sales and other such ridiculous charges.

Many e-commerce hosts charge inflated prices for what is nothing more than virtual hosting (a sub folder of someone elses site) It never ceases to amaze us that most online stores are paying upwards of £50 a month for a restricted and sub standard service. E-commerce hosting is no different than regular quality web hosting. It requires only mysql and php capabilities. Of course stores can use up more space than an information site for example, however in our opinion you should not be paying more than £30 a month to host your store. For £30 you can get ample web hosting for a fairly large store. If you are paying £50 plus then change your host, this can be done without interruption to your site by a competent host.

A saving of £20 a month either adds to your profit or gives you £240 extra per year to spend advertising your site.

Just like a major corporation as an online business owner you need to look at your bottom line, it affects profit. You need to monitor and improve the shopping experience of your clients.

We offer great website design, seo, hosting and domain services. We sell a number of ‘off-the-shelf’ solutions on our website, including a fantastic ecommerce solution that includes uk domain name, 12 months hosting, and a great custom built site with unlimited products, secure payment processing and loads of other features!

Your Blog or Website Bounce Rate How To Fix It

PHP Blog Scripts
by ZhangYining

Your Blog or Website Bounce Rate How To Fix It

You will want to know if your content is engaging the visitor and if so what they find interesting and most valuable from your site.

Google Analytics allows you to place some code in the form of html script on your site pages that will record the data of each visitor to your site.

Bounce rate is where a visitor arrives at your site and then immediately leaves by either clicking the back button or closing the window.

A bounced visitor is one who was looking for something in particular but did not find it when they came to your webpage.

A bounced visitor is a lost visitor and you have to consider several options to optimise each visitor to your site, whether it is to engage the visitor to visit other pages of your site or to get them to take a call to action you have placed, such as a sale or signing up for your newsletter.

A bounced visitor is often referred to as leaving money on the table, you really got nothing from them, when all you wanted was for them to visit your site and do something.

So why do visitors leave straight away and increase the percentage of your bounce rate?

Why Do Visitors Bounce

OK. Let’s assume that we are the bounce visitor. That’s my new term for this hubpage. Ask yourself why did you bounce? The answer maybe that you arrived at a site that had awful colours, the site was slow to load, the site had too many or not enough photos, it was full of ads or at worst, it looked like a novel from War and Peace that you simply did not want to read.

Bounce visitors leave your site on first impressions. Simple. First impressions. So how do you find out what’s wrong, why did they leave?

The best way is to have your partner, parents, friends, schoolmates, anyone really and the best are those who will be most critical of you, to look at your site and you ask them, no you demand from them, straight away, their first impression.

You will get either the “look” or the gasp or hopefully the confirmation you were looking for that the site is good. Now lets leave the last one out. If you wanted an answer that said the site was good, then it won’t help your bounce rate.

You want someone to say, the colour is too harsh, there are too many ads or the content is dribble, I hate it. You want the very worst comment from the persons first impression on your site. Gordon Ramsay springs to mind at this point, he’d tell you and will leave you on no uncertain terms why you have a high bounce rate.

What Do We Do Now?

You have had your site evaluated and found from that person what they first thought was wrong and turned them off. If its the colour then you can fix it by changing the colours around until the site is more suitable.

If its the content, then you can re-write it and make it more interesting or shorter and to the point.

If its because you have too many advertisements on your page, then reduce them or find a better place on the page for them.

It is by going through this process that you can get the aesthetics, the looking good part, of your page right to lessen the intitial reaction of your visitor to leave straight away.

Is that all you can do or is the more. Well of course there is. You know me by now, I always have a few tricks.

A Couple Of Secret Tricks

I love that heading. Sounds like I have invented something but in reality I have not invented anything at all, its just human nature and common sense that is the basis of these not so secret tricks.

To explain – On the world wide web we click, we click sites, the back button, sign up forms, Paypal buttons to make a purchase, advertisements and other links.

We go to a page and read the article or the blog post. When we finish that – is there anything else we can click on? No. Nine times out of ten there is nothing left for us but the bottom of the page or a comment bar.

Our reaction is straight to that little X in the top right hand corner or the back button.

The trick is to put a link there. Such as, “To read more visit more information” text link. Give your visitor something to click at the bottom of your post or page that directs them to a second page on your site. If they are interested they will click on the link for more information.

Thats what we want. Have the visitor click something after they have read the page or post so we record a unique visitor with zero bounce rate. This is the purpose of our site, to attract and command the attention of our visitors.

Not all visitors like to comment on a blog post, so place a link at the end of the post article. This way you are deep linking, internal linking your pages which is good for search engine optimisation.

Failing all that, place an advertisement there or a newsletter sign up form or email a friend capsule. If where going to lose the visitor then lets at least try to get them to take action.

Whether its an Adsense advertisement or other providers advertisement, we may just convert a visitor to a call to action. After all, thats one of the reasons we have our sites.

What we do not want is to have a subscribe to our RSS feed at the end of our post as visitors may subscribe and as they do leave the site creating a bounce visitor statistic. Place the rss subscription elsewhere on the page as if someone wants to subscribe they will. Thats why Blogger has the rss button at the top.

Having a related posts navigation button at the bottom of the page will always encourage the visitor to click for more information.

Basically, if you want to stop your visitors recording a bounce rate, then give them somewhere to go at the end of your pages. Entice them to read more and visit another page of your site.

You will probably find that there is nothing wrong with your site in the first place.

The visitor came, got what they want and left. Why not tempt them to keep clicking at the end.

Donation Clouds: donation plugin now to the Blogger and Php Scripts Site Recommendation

Donation Clouds: donation plugin now to the Blogger

Long ago, I saw in the site Fique Rico a very interesting plugin: Donation Clouds.

This is interesting because, gives anyone, a practical way of advertising. Moreover, is a form of prestigiate the work of the blogger giving him motivation to keep on blogging.

This process benefits both sides, the owner of the Blog, who receives the donation, and the donor, who receives a link on every page of the Blog.
If you think your Blog offers a quality of content, you make the donation and receives a link. It’s simple and fast.

The only problem that was only worked in WordPress. It was, is no more!

I am persistent and I was wondering how could put it in my Blog. I made some adjustments in style Magaiver (I am not any expert in the subject, so it is very likely that there is a better way to adapt), and finally succeeded.
