How To Create Your Own Home Server

In this tutorial you will learn how to step up your own server. This server will be comprised of Apache 1.3.5, PHP 4.2.0, and MySQL 3.23.49. This tutorial will address the basic setup of a server on your own computer. This means the removal of hassles of dealing with the company that is running a remote web server. It will be easy to modify. You can add any thing you want to it, be it CGI/Perl, Zope, Roxen, etc, all by your self. You will have unlimited disk space, well at least as big as your hard drive is =) Now that you know the advantages, it is time that I tell you what i used, and what you will need.

What Is Needed

* Windows 2000 – NOTE that if you are using 2k you WILL NEED Administrative Privileges. If you don’t then get them somehow =) If you are on NT, XP,
* Apache 1.3.6 – I tried to use 2.0 but I could not get it work. I also feel that 1.3.6 is tried and true, so why mess with greatness.
* Mysql 3.23.49 – The newest version of MySQL when I set up my server. MySQL also the is the best PHP supported Database, and well love PHP don’t we.
* PHP 4.2.1 – The latest and greatest PHP release. -nt

* Apache 2 – Link: h**p://www.apache.org/dist/
* Mysql 3.23.49 – Link: h**p://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysql-3.23.html
* PHP 4.2.0 – Link: h**p://www.php.net/downloads.php
* Windows – This tutorial is ONLY written for new versions of Windows.

Once you have downloaded all the programs you are ready to continue.

Installing Apache

The first step is to download Apache for Windows. Before you install it make sure that any other server software is removed. Remove it all via the control panel. Once you have clicked on the executable, a screen should com up that looks like this. Go ahead and click on next user posted image Of course you plan to abide be the license agreement, so click on I accept…. and click on next.

You really don’t need to read this, but if you want you can. Read it if you want feel informed. When you are ready click on next.

Here is where the actual setup of Apache begins. For Network Domain put in localhost as for Server Name You want these both to be localhost because the server is running locally, on your computer. It doesn’t matter what is in email field, just put in yours. No one will no it because it’s just you.

For the sake of this tutorial it is better to just leave it as it is because, later in the tutorial I will show you how to start the server with one click of the mouse, and for the sake of ease, it will be easier for you to follow along. You can change it if you want, but you will have to realize where to substitute it. For me the root drive is E: but for you will probably be C: Once you have all the jazz set up, it is time to install the server. If you are on w2k or XP be sure that you have Administrative permissions or you will get an error about half way through the install saving cannot access msvrt32.dll or something. If you get that error run it again when you have admin privileges. Once you are ready click on install. If all went well you just see a screen similar to this. Now it is time to test the install of apache. Click on Start > Program Files > Apache HTTP Server and look for start Start Apache in Console. Click it. Once it says Apache XXXXX running, press Windows Key + R and type -http://localhost/. If the install works you should see a page saying that it works. If all is set and done, continue to the next step.

Installing PHP

Once you have clicked on the executable, a screen should come up that looks like this. Go ahead and click on next. Of course you plan to abide be the license agreement, so click on I accept…. and click on next. For this information, we will want the simple standard install. Chances are you if you are reading this tutorial, you will probably not even want to talk about advanced =) This is the mail setup, just enter localhost, and me@localhost.com. These are not important, because you, the admin, are the only person that will use the server, and you will be the one handling errors. We are going to want this install to work is Apache, so click on Apache, and move on. Once you have all the jazz set up, it is time to install the server. If you are on w2k or XP be sure that you have Administrative permission or you will get an error about half way through the install saving cannot access msvrt32.dll or something. If you get that error run it again when you have admin privileges. Once you are ready click on install.  After the install is done you should get something that says you will have to manually configure apache to use php. Assuming you have a working Apache server installed, make sure that it is not running. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\conf\ open the httpd.conf file. Note that you can also get to the http.conf from the start menu. Start > Program File > Apache HTTP Server > Configure Apache Server > Edit the Apache httpd.conf Configuration File and the window will open up in notepad. Now hit Ctrl + End if you see something like what follows, you can skip this step. If you do not see that code, copy it. This code will only work if you used the default install folder when you installed php. If you did, copy that code and paste it into the end of the file. Select the code to right, and hit crtl + c , then go into the httpd.conf file and hit ctrl + v and save the file.

Now that we have php installed, it is time to test it. Open up notepad and type the code to the right. Save it as phpinfo.php. Remember to set it as all files in the drop down menu, or the file will be a text file. Save in the Directory: C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\htdocs. htdocs is the directory where all the files go. You can create endless dir’s and browse them. For Example E:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\htdocs\mydir\myfile.php could be accessed as http://localhost/mydir/myfile.php. Once you have that file saved. You will need to start the Server. Click: Start > Program File > Apache HTTP Server >; and look for something like Start Apache in Console. After you have found it, launch it. You should get a window saying that Apache is running. Now go to Start > Run > and type in -http://localhost/phpinfo.php. If you don’t see anything, php is not installed correctly. If php is installed correctly, you will see a few large tables, displaying php’s configuration. Now Your are 1/2 done!

Installing MySQL

Once you have clicked on the executable, a screen should com up that looks like this. Go ahead and click on next.  Of course you plan to abide be the license agreement, so click on I accept…. and click on next.  Just like before you should leave the default dir alone, so you will be able to follow along with me when I show you how to start and stop all the aspects of the server.

Stay with the typical installation. Just like before, if you don’t have admin privileges, the install will be faulty. After you click next, the install will begin. After the install has finished, move on to the next step.

Now you have to set up the root account. The root account is the absolute admin of the system, the highest possible. Click on Start > Run and type cmd to open up the command prompt. You are going to have to navigate to where MySQL is installed. Type C: > Enter > cd mysql > Enter > cd bin > Enter. Now you have to tell setup the root settings. Type mysqladmin -uroot password InsertYourPasswordHere then hit enter.

What is the point of having a database if you can’t easily administer it! That is where phpMyAdmin comes into play. phpMyAdmin is a free piece of software written in php that makes the administration of a mysql or many other types of databases easy. You will want to download (h**p://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phpmyadmin/phpMyAdmin-2.2.6-php.zip?downloadrelease_id=85832)the latest version. Save it in the htdocs folder. Once it is done downloading it, right click on it and select Extract > To Here. When it is done you should end up with a directory in the htdocs folder called phpMyAdmin-2.2.6 To make it easier to access, rename it to phpMyAdmin. After you have renamed it, click on it and look for a file called config.inc Open it. This is where you set the configuration of phpMyAdmin. When you open it up, it should look similar to the image to your side. On yours there should be a few things missing. The $ cfgPmaAbsoulteUrl and $ cfgservers[$ i]['password']. You will need to fill those in between the quotes. for the $ cfgPmaAbsoulteUrl enter -http://localhost/phpMyAdmin/ if you followed my instructions to the letter. If you did not rename it or extracted to a different directory, put that in there. For the $ cfgservers[$ i]['password'] enter the password you entered when you were setting MySQL in the set above. You can refer to the image for help. After you have put the right things in save the file.

Now we want to test the install of mysql, php, phpmyadmin, and apache all at once. Start apache in console like we did before. Now, you are going to need to start mysql. For myself I made a file that would start mysql for me. Open notepad and type: start c:\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe –standalone and save that as Start MySQL.bat. Once you have saved it, click it. A window should open and then close. Mysql is now running on your computer. After mysql and apache are started go to run again and type -http://localhost/phpMyAdmin/index.php and if everything is installed correctly phpmyadmin should so up. You are almost done! Now we have the easy part =)

How To Create A Free Newsletter With WordPress

Did you know that you can use WordPress to create a newsletter? Did you know that you can do it for free? I did it yesterday and I’m going to show you via this post just exactly how I managed to achieve it in five minutes.

All you will need is:

– Some spare time (about five minutes at the most).
– Advanced Category Excluder (ACE) plug-in
– Feedburner account.

Step 1 – Add New Category

Go to Post > Categories and create a new category, this will be where all your newsletter posts will be published so try and give it a name that you know is for your newsletter.

When you create the category make sure you take a note of the ID number as you will need it later on. You can find this out by going to Post > Categories and looking for your newly created category on the right. Put your mouse cursor on the name of the category and you should see the ID number.

Step 2 – Excluding Category From Public View

You do not want your new category to be shown on your blog. This is the messy bit, you will need to edit the HTML code. Simply go to Appearance > Editor and find lines of code that look something like this:

When you find it replace it with the following code:

Step 3 – Exclude The Posts From Public View

Now you have excluded the category from public view you will now have to do the same with the posts, otherwise they will show up in your RSS feed and your blog. This is a lot easier than the previous step and does not involve any editing.

I used a plug-in called called Advanced Category Excluder (ACE) that made this step incredibly easy. All you have to do is install it, activate it, go to ACE > Categories and tick the newsletter box in all sections.

If you can not see the newsletter category listed then simply add a post to that category and it should now show up.

Step 4 – Create a New Feed in FeedBurner

Create a new feed with Feedburner. The link to create the feed is:

http://www.yoursitename.com/?feed=rss2&cat=[Replace with your Category Id]

Step 5 – Enabling E-mail Newsletter

Once the feed is set up you should now set up the email feature. Go to Publicize > E-mail Subscription and activate it.

Once activated you will see some code, that is your sign up box that you should place on your blog to get new subscribers.

Step 6 – Sending Newsletter

Now you have activated the feed you should now click on the sub-sections under E-mail Subscription and edit the changes to your needs. The important one is Delivery Options.

Step 7 – Select Full Text

The final step is to go back to your WordPress admin panel and go to Settings > Reading and tick the Full Text option and then click save. This means your subscribers will get full posts instead of excerpts.

As you can see above, we added “Type X5KG” to the label/input. Basically, next to the input box, it says “Type X5KG”.

Next, on our blank PHP page which before, we called “send.php”, we need to write this code down:

You may be able to see that after the exclamation mark and equals sign, in single quotes, we wrote the code we came up with eariler, in lowercase, otherwise the whole code won’t work. “!= “x5kg’)”

Where it says “{die(‘Wrong code, please try again!’);}” means the message that comes up if the visitor gets the code wrong. So if they do manage to make a mistake typing in the random characters, it will simply say “Wrong code, please try again!”

Ebay Affiliate Program – The Good, Bad & Ugly

I’ve used the ebay affiliate program in the past to make some decent money.  The benefit of using ebay is that the content changes on a regular basis plus ebay pays a high percentage of profit back to its affiliates.

The downside in the past is that you had to stay on top of the code and make sure it showed relevant auctions. On some days I’d check one of my websites where I was using the ebay affiliate program and it was spot on. Other days, my site was showing auctions for everything from lingerie to collectible dolls from Japan! (the site is an industrial tool site)

When the ads were showing relevant auctions, I’d make pretty good money. When they weren’t, which was often, I wouldn’t make a penny.

I hoped that AuctionAds would change this, but I’ve had the same problem with AuctionAds as I did getting the code directly from ebay.

Eventually I got tired of fighting with the code and quirky nature of the ebay affiliate program and stopped using it. I’ve also removed all AuctionAds from my sites as well.

Create An Ebay Affiliate Site In Minutes

I kept hearing about a program, or script, called BANS on the DigitalPoint Forums. It was getting rave reviews from those who had used it. I was still skeptical because I know some of the Forum members would stretch the truth to make a sale.

So I researched this program. It’s called Build A Niche Store or BANS for short.

It’s a PHP script that creates webpages that have specific ebay auctions on them. It can even create normal HTML pages within your site.

What BANS does is create an entire website. It uses several templates that come with the program. One of the features of this script is that you can use it with your own templates by inserting a little PHP code. (which the user manual describes in detail)

I found BANS a lot easier to set up than I had originally thought it would be. I’m not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination, so I was a little worried. However all the reviews I’d read stated the program was simple to set up and use.

And it was.

My first site took me about 30 minutes to get installed and set up the basic functions. My installation time for new sites has now been reduced to 10 to 15 minutes per site since I’ve became familiar with the script.

The templates that come with the script are customizable. You can choose the color and layout. If you now the basics of CSS, you can change quite a bit on the templates. The possibilities are nearly endless!

Getting Started With the Build A Niche Store Program

Before I go any further, I will tell you that you’ll need a CJ PID number (which you get when you joing CJ) and be approved by Ebay. These are simple to obtain, so I’ll not spend time on them.

Once you have the site installed and live, you can then begin to customize each page. BANS works off ebay category numbers. Once you’ve picked a main category, the script will even show sub-categories off of the main one if you want it to.

If the Category you choose is a big one, you could have literally hundreds of pages created within minutes.

I first used BANS on a site of mine that is 3 years old. I have never been able to nail down the niche for this site because I picked too broad of a subject when I first built the site. I’ve been wanting to make a change to the site, so once I had the BANS program, I wiped out the site and started fresh.

Within 30 minutes I had a basic BANS site up and running. Over the next several days, I created a custom logo and customized my Auction pages (which is important if you want you pages SEO’d, which in itself is important if you want free organic traffic from the search engines!)

Since this site was several years old and ranked fairly good for several search terms, I had early traffic. Not a whole lot, but enough that the site started making money within 3 days.

I wish I could say that about every site I built!

I then proceeded to make another site with a new domain. I was curious to see how long it would be before my first sale with a spanking new domain.

Again, I had BANS installed on the new domain within 30 minutes. In about two days, I had a hot new content rich website with fresh graphics ready to go.

I had the site indexed in Google within 4 days.

Then, the first sale happened on the 6th day. Not a huge sale, but a sale none-the-less!

That site is about two months old. I got all of the pages indexed and it’s ranking for some top keywords in its niche. (it’s a small niche so this wasn’t an Earth shattering task)

I’m now making some good change off this website.

More websites followed. (I have 7 BAN sites currently) My goal is to have anywhere from 50 to 100 BANS sites within a year. I’m concentrating on small niches and I’m working on each site making anywhere from 0 to 00 per month. With the results I’m seeing so far from this program, I should reach that goal fairly easily.

One of the things that sold me on BANS is that it’s so customizable. I don’t want my sites to look like everyone else’s. I can also drill down to specific products and choose how many products per page are shown.

Furthermore, all auctions are relevant since they work off of category numbers and not “keywords”.

The other thing I loved is how it created sub-categories automatically. That is a huge, HUGE, time-saver…and money maker!

A basic paycounter using PHP

What is a paycounter, well anyone who has built Adult sites will know that a paycounter is a counter which displays small images, these images are about 120×60 in size. These are basically advertisements. There used to be a number of Adult counters that allowed people to sign up and you placed there code on your site and when someone clicked on the counter you generated some income, usually a few cents per click. This was great for adult sites but not really suitable for mainstream sites due to the nature of the advertised images, well you can easily roll your own basic example which will serve the purpose of a counter and also offer some advertising revenue if anyone clicks on the links.

The system is split into 2 basic parts the first is the generation of an ad and the storing of the visitor count in a seperate file and the second which would be used by the webmaster is a system to display the stats.

Firsly create a file called paycounter.txt and put whatever the count you wish to display in it. Next create the script in part 1 and call it paycounter.php. This consists of various functions and features the first

Part 2: Show stats

This is a small script that can be put on a page called paystats.php for example. This also could be shown on a seperate page only viewable by the admin

We basically open up the paycounter file that we used in the first script and read in the value in it, then we display this on the screen.

MySQL backend for storing of stats and also for displaying of advertisements. Use cookies to only register one visit per person in an certain period of time, say one per day. Multiple pages with stats.

This does not mean that the objects are being passed by value. The result is quite the opposite. The novel feature means that object handles will be passed by value and objects will be passed by reference.

Now PHP will perform functions like a proper Object Oriented language with this latest release of PHP 5. Objects acting like objects will now be of great advantage to the end users, as the overall functionality of the application gets enhanced. Consequently the application will run faster and the problems with regards to object orientation will reduce considerably.
